Students in the Public Relations Campaigns course worked with Three Harbors Council to research and design new strategies for engagement with Boy Scouts in Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha.
Every spring, the public relations majors and minors in Public Relations Campaigns work with a local nonprofit to come up with a campaign to help that nonprofit be successful. In the past, the class has worked with the government of the City of Zion, Ill. and nonprofits like United Way of Kenosha County.
This spring, their focus was on Three Harbors Council, the council that oversees Scouts of America troops in Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha County. In spring 2024, Mary Kveton from Three Harbors Council reached out to Professor Colleen Palmer to make the connection and ask for help from her and her students in thinking of new ways to build membership and parent volunteer numbers. The class met with council members several times throughout the semester and did deep research into audience analysis, social media analysis, print and media content, and more to discover whatever missing links could be filled to meet the needs the council mentioned.
Students in the course — which is very student-led, giving students the experience of running their own agency — decided to create a new social media campaign for the council so that they can begin to have better conversations with their publics and engage them. The students’ final presentation to the council not only included a deep dive into the audience analysis of the three counties the council oversees, but also had clear and achievable guidelines, examples, and plans for all five of their social media platforms, as well as how to connect specifically with audiences on those platforms (LinkedIn, Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube).
Their work was enthusiastically received and Ms. Kveton has emailed to say new practices are being put into place to see how the council can develop along this line.
Congratulations to all students in the class, and thank you to Three Harbors Council of Scouting America for the opportunity for our students to work alongside you this past semester.
