**Position Overview**
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC), Environmental, Safety & Health (ESH) Division is seeking a Health & Safety Specialist with substantial experience in the continuous development and implementation of the chemical and waste management programs. Comprehensive knowledge and field experience of hazardous materials and regulated waste management requirements, concepts and practices to ensure compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations is highly valued for this position, as well as field experience as an emergency responder to relevant incidents.
The successful candidate will provide leadership on ESH issues and assist management in understanding the impacts of chemical and waste issues, enabling prudent allocation of resources and decision-making. Success in this role is highly dependent on the ability to collaborate and develop great working relationships with scientific and operational organizations within the laboratory and between government agency representatives. We are seeking a goal-oriented team player with the desire and ability to effectively work in a small crew or independently in both office and field environments. The optimal candidate needs to be able to multitask, as the position requires the individual to perform various duties on a regular basis.
**Your specific responsibilities include:**
+ Manage hazardous material and regulated (including but not limited to hazardous, medical, and biohazardous) wastes from site operations and projects to ensure effective implementation of chemical and waste programs.
+ Under limited supervision, perform moderately complex technical work in a wide range of environmental, health, and safety disciplines to ensure a safe work environment and to achieve compliance with SLAC¿s environmental, health, and safety standards and governmental regulatory requirements.
+ Develop, implement, and maintain processes, tools, programs, systems, and procedures necessary to ensure the overall safety and health of employees and the community.
+ Conduct comprehensive management of hazardous materials and wastes throughout their lifecycles from inception to final off-site disposal.
+ Develop and conduct training in support of hazardous material and waste programs to enable successful learning and development across complex and diverse organizations.
+ Monitor and prevent potential hazards and unsafe conditions that could be present in the work area.
+ Investigate accidents, incidents, injuries, and complaints concerning potential hazards or unsafe conditions in the workplace.
+ Recommend and implement improvements in processes, design, procedures, and operating equipment to minimize the hazard potential.
+ May act as a lead or technical expert and provide direction to less experienced personnel working on environmental, health and safety programs.
+ Perform chemical and waste management activities, including input, hazard classification, reconciliation, inventory management; chemical labeling, segregation, and storage, including management of time-sensitive chemicals.
+ Provide technical advice and interpretation of various government regulations and applicable policies; maintain working knowledge of specific government regulations.
**To be successful in this position you will bring:**
+ Bachelor¿s degree in science in related scientific field and three years progressively responsible experience in hazardous material and waste management, environmental science, emergency response and/or scientific field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
+ Knowledge and experience in chemical and waste management activities, including input, hazard classification, reconciliation, inventory management; chemical labeling, segregation, and storage, including management of time-sensitive chemicals.
+ Ability to provide timely response and mitigation to relevant emergencies and incidents.
+ Demonstrated ability to conduct effective health and safety surveys, quantitative and qualitative exposure/ risk assessments, and most complex data analyses; ability to provide recommendations for exposure/risk control.
+ Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with diverse audiences; ability to explain technical concepts clearly and concisely.
+ Ability to maintain current knowledge of and interpret specific government agency requirements (statutes, regulations, licenses, and permits) and university policies.
+ Working knowledge of the scientific and technical aspects of various regulatory requirements and potential impact on assigned work area(s).

The expected pay range for this position is $116,115 to $134,567 per annum. SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
